Perfect for a bedroom-cools and blocks light
I like having a window unit in my bedroom. I recently replaced a 20-year-old 5000 BTU unit made by GE with a Medea, but it unfortunately made a rattling/grinding noise every time the compressor came on. What I did like about that unit was that it was black. I really like the fact that it helps to block light that would normally come through with a white air conditioner. I decided to go back to GE, and was able to find that they did indeed produce a black unit, and it really does a nice job of blocking light from coming into my bedroom. At 5000 BTUs, it is the correct size for the room, and keeps the room nice and cool. The fan itself is a bit loud, but that doesn't bother me because it is very much like a white noise generator. The compressor comes on very quietly, so it doesn't interrupt my sleep. So far, this has been a good purchase, and because it is such a simple air conditioner, without all the bells and whistles of being a smart unit with Wi-Fi and remote controls, I expect that it will last for years-just like my previous GE.

great ac unit...
We are so happy with this new unit. We updated from the last unit GE was selling. There have been NO PROBLEMS at all with it so far. It runs quiet and when the compressor comes on you can hardly hear it. I am grateful for this unit. Thank you GE. BLESSINGS.

Watch out if buying other than new ....
I have bought a couple of these little 5K btu A/C 's GE manual control . The new one was fine , no problems . This past winter I bought another listed as "like new" . The "like new" unit came in a box that was battered and more repair tape than cardboard . This "like New" unit looked like it had been dropped from a 3rd story window , most of metal parts were bent and much of the rear coil fins bent flat . Front plastic panel cracked, on and on . It did however have all the parts . Didn't look at it much until warm weather came , ( by then of course the return window was expired ) . Got the toolbox out and began straightening metal , gluing plastic , putting fins back in place etc . HEY ! it works ! Have been running the unit for several days now and it works just fine on low cool or high cool . One of the selector knobs on front panel is a little off alignment , just marked it with a sharpie . Bottom line , Would think twice about ordering a "like new" unit , who even knows what a lesser rated unit would look like . I give GE 5+ stars for making a "tuff" little A/C but must subtract a star for the condition of the "like new" unit I received .This Is ; InMyOpinion .

Super cold
Bought it for my barber shed setup 10x8 size. This unit is intended for rooms up to 240square feet so this is plenty for my 80 square shed. Its been alittle more than a month and so far good.

I've had it since April 2023 and have updated the review a few times
It does work fairly well. I would not recommend it for people who are susceptible to respiratory issues. I live in a humid climate which may play a part in the issues I have with this unit. If you leave the drain plug in like the manufacturer recommends for efficiency then the inside will get nasty faster. If you leave the drain plug out it will be easier to tell when the unit gets nasty on the inside because it will usually quit dripping just before it needs cleaned. You will have to pull this thing out of the window, take the case off of it, and clean the inside of it monthly to prevent mold and bacteria from growing in the unit. The drain is elevated above the bottom of the drain pan by about a quarter inch so the drain pan will never completely drain. It is difficult to clean because the way that the fan shroud is designed causes debris to get trapped in a small area that is hard to access without further disassembly. If you have someone in your home who is highly susceptible to mold then you will have to disassemble this thing beyond what the warranty allows in order to sanitize it. Make sure you take pictures at every step of the disassembly so that you can put it back together after you clean it on the inside because instructions for cleaning beyond just the filter are not included in the product manual. If you live in a home with older windows, the bottom of the window opening doesn't come flush with the interior window sill, or you don't want to drive screws through your window sill then you will need to get a stand for the unit. When using a stand you will have to cover the window sill with a board big enough to raise the unit above the bottom of the window opening to prevent window damage and use boards to fill the gaps under the outer shrouds so that you have a surface to attach the unit and the shrouds to. For that setup you will also need foam to close the gaps under and around the stand. At this point I wish I would have kicked out a couple hundred dollars more to get a unit that exhausts out the window instead of having to be mounted in it. The noise is comparable to any other portable unit so if you don't like noise then either pay through the nose to get a larger central unit for your house or get a mini split system so that the noisy part of the unit stays outside.February 2025 updateI added a picture to show you some of the crap you'll have to clean out of the unit regularly. The picture was taken after an hour worth of cleaning and I still have more to go before I can reassemble it. The mold has already crept into the styrofoam fan and blower shroud enough that I'm not going to be able to get it all out this time. One of the accordion window shrouds has already torn in one area and will have to tape it together before I use it again. More of the foam adhesive tape they used to assemble the fan and blower shroud has torn apart. This might end up being the last year that I get to use this unit because every time I clean it it gets harder to eliminate the mold and the pink crap even when I use bleach. If you have a family member who is susceptible to mold or respiratory issues I would advise against buying this unit unless you're desperate and plan on cleaning it thoroughly every other month. If that's the case then the level of disassembly you'll have to do to get it clean will be more than enough to void the one year warranty the first time you clean it. I will add another picture the next time I clean it from before I start so you can get an idea of how bad it gets.

Awesome
2 years of being on nearly 24/7 and it's still going strong. Very quiet compared to other units. Definitely would buy again.

I works great!!
It's small but mighty. I love how it cools fast and it stays cool. I have no issues with it at all.
