This is an excellent history of real life western figures. I learned a great deal about historical people who have inspired my imagination for years. Some I wished would have been more detailed but in general this book was really very good.

In this volume, the men and women who shaped the Old West are given biographical vignettes, framed by character anecdotes and in the historical context of the age. After an introduction to the development of the Wild West, the rest of the book presents representative individuals, whose larger than life personalities made each of them legends of their own making. Among them are Billy the Kid (Willam Bonney), Buffalo Bill, Seth Bullock, Davey Crockett, Annie Oakley, Jesse James, and Geronimo. Although a few of them had interactions with one or two on the list, each of their stories could stand on their own. Here's where it gets uneven. Not all of the characters had photographs to illustrate their stories; and having a few more women or Native Americans would have rounded out the book nicely. On the whole though, it's a fascinating read, either singly for each character, or the whole book.

The book I’d divided into chronological categories: early indigenous people, gold rush, outlaws, etc. I found a few new facts, refreshed some information and had an enjoyable time reading The Old West. Nice photos also. There seemed to be a balanced presentation in some areas,p and politicians were criticized justifiably. This is a good reference book. Students would be drawn to the story as the length and vocabulary isn’t intimidating. Recommended for every US history teacher as a room reference.

An enjoyable read into the world of the United States' wild west. The history of the times, the back story, the characters that are remembered all make for easy, educational reading.

Once again a great addition to the Captivating History lineup. Broad overview of the Old West with books dedicated to some of the most well known characters from history. For anyone looking for a broad overview of the history of the Old West I would highly recommend this collection.

History is easy to understand format. Start reading a book and you don't want to put it down.

These are just nice quick reads that give you some nice history, but nothing too deep.

The author has written an excellent book on what had transpired in the days when the Old Wild West and its colorful characters lived.

Bought as a gift for my husband. He is loving reading it.
