Replacement Crossovers for Aging Boston Acoustics ProSeries 5.0 SE
I needed high-quality passive crossover replacements for my Boston crossovers. The problem was the Bostons used electrolytic capacitors that were going bad. One crossover would not push anything to the tweeter unless I gave a savage spin to the volume knob. When the old Boston crossover would cooperate, there was a low-level crackling that was masked by Tool and Korn and Stevie Ray Vaughan's distortions, but when listening to Steely Dan's Aja or any mid-range rich Enya, it was it immediately apparent that there was a scratchy noise that did NOT increase with volume alone, but which increased at or near where the inductor and capacitor interact.. thus, a component issue. And the fact that it was at low levels and was not present when I switch the amp channels eliminated the amp as the culprit. One other thing that probably contributed, especially since the cap was bad, was the fact the inductors were iron core, which was not my preference to begin with. Anyway, I have been a long-time fan of Image Dynamics since the 90's and always kept up with them. So, when I needed to replace my Boston crossovers, I naturally checked to see if I could use the Image Dynamics. I was very pleased to find out they are designed with a coaxial as well as split system in mind, just like the Bostons. Plus, the Image Dynamics use metallized film polyester capacitors and air core inductors. I got a pair and installed them, and I immediately noticed the crackling from my speakers had disappeared! After doing a recalibration of the head unit's equalization curve via the built-in processor and the included mic that came with my Pioneer DEH-80PRS, the sound was incredibly smooth, detailed, and controlled. BAM! So... what did I do next? I bought two more sets, of course!
