Well made, great quality and perfect for the garden
It’s great. Excellent quality, not cheap plastic. Well made and will look perfect in the garden. My husband is a Japanese garden aficionado and loved this as a gift.

rather than tea ceremony use - that's my best guess at the difference
This really isn't what I'd hoped it would be - unlike most tea scoops used in tea ceremony that are natural bamboo without a finish, there's some kind of clear sealant, and the walls of the cup are much thicker than the ones I'm accustomed to practicing with, meaning you don't get as much water per scoop because of how thick the walls are. In addition, water leaks through the hole where the handle joins the cup. I wish it had been more clear in the description that this was meant for gardening use, rather than tea ceremony use - that's my best guess at the difference, anyway?

Not suitable for tea ceremony
This hishaku has a number of problems which mitigate its use for actually making tea in ceremony. There's no notch at the center of the grip as is expected so it's difficult to find the proper place to grip it. The part where the handle goes into the scoop is not water-tight, so water drips out when it's filled up close to the brim. The whole hishaku is laminated with some strange coating which is glossy and not great-looking. The hishaku should be just natural bamboo. At least it's cheap. Good for practice as long as you mark the middle part of the handle with a marker or something.

Good one
Good one. Love the thinner paddle which makes it easier to scoop water.... and love the extra long handle...

A realistic piece of Japan in my NZ tea garden
It is just perfect in my little tea garden. See photo. I made the little table and shortened the bamboo sticks to suite. The only disappointment is the cup has a split under the handle but it is not visible until it is picked up.
