Best Laser Print Quality, Super Fast, Quality Build, Higher Toner Cost But Worth It
I have bought several all-in-one monochrome laser printers over the years from Brother, Lexmark, and HP. I have found that generally with the higher print speeds, the print quality is typically mediocre since in order to keep the cost-per-page low, less toner is used and the print quality suffers. If you're doing general business printing where high quality type and graphics are not that important and lower cost per page is, other brands work well. (Although Lexmark all-in-ones I have used have overly complicated touch screens.) However, this time I wanted the near typeset quality print that most laser printers used to have decades ago, so I bought the Canon ImageCLASS D1650 and I have been very pleased with it so far. The cost-per-page of this all-in-one quoted in reviews is about double of other comparable brands, BUT those other brands have separate imaging drums while the Canon has the drum built into the toner cartridge, so when you replace toner you're also replacing the drum. This leads to higher cost per page, but consistently high quality print, much cleaner type and graphics than my other all-in-ones. So the higher cost per page is worth it to me.The build quality of this printer is solid, and it's more compact than other all-in-one printers in my offices. Time to print from your computer is blazingly fast, almost instantly on my Macs and PCs. You can add on an additional two paper trays if desired to make this a great workgroup printer. The touch screen interface is customizable, easy to use, and not overly complicated unlike a Lexmark all-in-one I have. Setup on my networked Macs and PCs was straightforward, though driver installation was not as easy as my HP printers; once the driver was installed on Macs, the printer must be manually added in the OS control panel, and in some cases the printer did not show up in network discovery and had to be added using the printer's IP address. We always set static IP addresses on our network printers, so that was no big deal for me, but newbies and nontechnically inclined people may find it somewhat difficult.Scanning using ReadIris OCR software and TWAIN software for images works fine with this printer, as does scanning to PDFs. The one-pass duplex scanning and faxing also speeds those processes. The legal sized document glass and paper trays are also a plus.Since print quality is important to me, I'll likely buy a Canon laser printer in the future as long as I can get the near typeset quality print.

Great little printer.
Fairly small, reasonably priced cartridges and fast.

1st month, so for so good.
This cannon is a nice upgrade from the IR3225. The only thing I have issues with is the iFax option. It does not seem to like Gmail POP settings. I hired an IT team to take a look at what's the communication issue and they said they're going to have to code something on our server-side that will allow the printer to communicate with Gmail. Regular faxes work well, Scans work but default settings are too light. So I had to modify it to a higher density/DPI. What else, SMPT works flawlessly with Gmail, so I can send emails directly from this machine. (weird that SMPT works but POP has issues) One thing that I didn't realize is there is no internal HDD (My IR3225 came with one) It's a non-issue because there's a USB port available and USB jump drive sizes nowadays range up to 512 GB sooo yeah... The address book was easy to set up. The software is clunky but works well. Our average use is 100 pages /day and we have 8 Machines connected to this guy. Hope this helps you to decide. Oh, I bought the 4-year accidental damage protection plan, just in case someone or something breaks it.1/14/22 UPDATENearly 3 years later and it's still truckin along. It survived the pandemic! I definitely recommend getting the expansion tray if you print often. Cleaning this unit is a breeze. Our old ImageRunner was not so lucky, it died so now we just have the D1650. Overall I'd say it's a worthwhile purchase. Our company has expanded from a 5 mil to a 50 mil company. It's been exciting times. But this expansion has now caused me to look for more printers! So I'm currently in the market for a "Color" laserjet. Trying to keep with the Cannon but the corporate life might make us switch to HP. Either way, I'll leave a review on the next printer I pick up as well.
