Indispensable book for learning digital video
I've been schooling myself in digital video, using several resources, and Digital SLR Video and Filmmaking for Dummies has proved to be indispensable in ensuring that I'm using solid, accurate and appropriate information. I'm preparing to do a major video project and I'm not going to fully rely on information from just one source on the technical aspects. John Carucci has delivered all the assurance I need in this book.My background is that of a 40+ year still photography professional, who began his career way back in the "film age," and who has fully embraced digital photography to the point where I teach it to others. But, I've shied away from video... until now. Thank you, Mr. Carucci and the Dummies publishers for making my transition so much easier!

Fun to read and packed with goodies
I am a total beginner, I didn't even know what 'DSLR' meant when I ordered this book, but I was drawn to the 'filmmaking' part of the title. It has always been a dream of mine to make my own movie and this book tells you how, including choosing and accessorizing the right gear, how to hold the camera steady, how to work with actors, what to do when i finish my movie, and more. I am really enjoying the author's sense of humor, it is written with a streak of rock and roll in it. And it's true, I am finding myself laughing out loud from time to time.

Great book... dont buy used
Maybe its a language barrier, but good/ like new doesnt mean โpages falling out, all of them folded, and someone dropped kicked the book down a vent shaftโ. Good material, avoiding this seller from now on

Tons of Good Information
Very logically organized and touches on all aspects of making films with DSLRs. Easy to read. The book brings up many aspects that one may easily overlook. Armed with the information in this book on such topics as having the right equipment, dealing with talent and crew, lighting, sound, editing and post-production will certainly enhance success in film making.

Lots of useful information
This book does what it says, gets you to use the video facilities on your DSLR. Much of the basics of video making is also explained in an easy to understand way. The book is great because it is aimed at DSLR video use rather than dedicated cameras. As a person who has neglected the video making capabilities of my DSLR this book has filled me with ideas and the skills necessary to use this facility. The book covers all the main makes and editing facilities and points out the differences between the various functions as it goes through the buttons on the cameras. There is also a lot of information about how to put a video together to make it polished and attractive to those whop may view it. It covers all the formats, compression techniques and key terms. I have got a lot from this book and I now use the facilities I paid for when buying my new camera. If you want to explore video and are not quite sure where to start then this is the book you will need. Advanced users may find it a bit basic but there is plenty for everyone here, a well written and produced book.

Not entirely convinced
I was not a complete beginner to DSLR video when I bought this book but was hoping that it would consolidate and fill in the many gaps that I have in my existing knowledge. The book has a lot of content but for me did not give enough depth to most of the subjects covered and put emphasis on things perhaps not of that much interest to me, which you could say is a matter of person choice. It has attempted to please both the novice and the relatively experienced film maker but I believe that is where it fails as you can't effectively satisfy the learning needs of these two very different groups of learners. Also the author uses a very informal and jokey style which seems to be common in most books in this series but to be honest I got a bit fed up with it after a while; maybe I just haven't got the same sense of humour. The book is also very wordy; I'm sure the same things could have been said in fewer pages. On a practical side, the publishers have included a lot of colour photos in the book which is good but you desperately miss video examples which I know at least one other book provides, that could teach you so much more, after all we're talking about moving pictures here. All in all, not bad as an instruction book but consider others as well.

Excellent, engaging guide
As a beginner in using my DSLR for shooting video this book was a real help.It covers the basic and explains the jargon in a well written, humorous guide. It covers using basic non-linear editing software with the focus on Adobe Premier Elements.Actually quite inspirational, giving advice on many subjects including making documentaries, music videos as well as working with actors! All in all an excellent book, a humorous read written by a knowledgable author. Their enthusiasm for the subject is clear from the first page, where some Dummies guides are quite dry. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to make the most out of their DSLRs features.
