SMALL for 17" laptops.
I have mixed feelings about this laptop table. On the positive side, it is fairly easy to use because it clicks (and safely locks) each piece in to place quite easily. It is flexible to virtually any height and shape-need.Veering towards the positive to negative side, the desk seems relatively sturdy most of the time-- though it is a little bouncy in some positions. This is compounded when you have a heavy laptop on it (mine weighs about 8lbs). Tumbleability is also increased if the laptop desk (with a heavy laptop) is placed on a squishy surface, like a bed. This isn't the fault of the desk per say, but it is something to be aware of.On the negative side (for me!), the desk simply doesn't have the surface area I desired. It says it will take a 17" laptop, and mine is a 17.3". Though lots of products seem to say "FOR 17" LAPTOPS!" and then in small print somewhere, they cite the 17.3" size. I sorta was beginning to believe 17.3" is somewhat standard, but who knows. At any rate THIS desk is not quite big enough for my lap top. This compounds the issue of the desk being somewhat jiggly in some positions, as my laptop hangs a skosh off the edge-- by say roughly an inch along the whole front (or back- depending on how you are positioning the desk for your needs). The width is good enough for the laptop, nothing more, which brings up the design flaw in the perforations. While the size cited on the desk is "up to 17"", this desk was clearly designed to be ideal for a much smaller laptop. The perforations only span across 2/3 of the desktop surface.I got this desk to use while sitting in bed to keep my laptop ventilated and off my bed or lap. It does that. It works, but it barely fits my laptop, it doesn't ventilate as well as it could and because it is already too small for my laptop it is even further incompatible with my Targus chill mat (which I like by the way, but which doesn't hold the unit OFF my bed so that it can vent properly since it vents out the bottom). I was hoping this desktop would allow me to really keep my laptop cool with my chill mat, but instead I am sorta wishing I had neither this desk, nor the chill mat, and instead one of the units that works as a desk+chill mat with built in fans. That said I am having troubles finding things that REALLY fit the 17.3" laptops-- skins, covers, bags, laptop desks, etc. Who knows what I would be dealing with if I had the 18+ inch screen! This item is decent. It could be sturdier, as with all the flexibility in shape possibility you have built in flexibility-- which is somewhat the opposite of sturdiness! The desk is also clearly better for a laptop more like a 14-15 inch size or smaller. Saying this is good for up to 17" is kinda like saying I can mash my feet in a size 7 shoe if I am a 7.5. I can, but it is less than ideal.Best of luck to you!

There's a user friendly fail here
There's a little flex in the desktop and you end up getting some bounce as you type but otherwise the unit seems sturdy enough to be satisfactory at this price point. I have seen complaints that other stands do not come with any instructions but this stand does and they are helpful. The instruction sheet has pictures of the stand in the various configurations in which you can arrange the legs to achieve a maximum stability at a given height and there was a position or two I wouldn't have thought to use without seeing it.There is one big User Unfriendly feature here, however. The buttons to adjust the legs have degree marks and you're supposed to end up with the corresponding legs being set at the same degree values. However, the degree marks are labeled from 30 degrees to 150 degrees in both directions on the dial from the 0 degree mark, with unlabeled marks indicated at each midpoint between two consecutive labeled points. The one 180 degree mark is between the two 150 degree marks, or rather between the two unlabeled 165 degree marks. As I said there are pictured examples of the various ways you can set up the stand and the degree values you want the legs to be set at to achieve each configuration. For instance, if you want one of the configurations pictured it is indicated you should set the stand at 0 degrees on what are clearly the two outer dials when all the legs are in the full collapse position, -45 degrees for the middle dials, and -75 degrees for the inner dials. The problem is there is no indication of which mark is for -45 degrees and which is for +45 degrees. When you're new to adjusting the stand and you're tending to turn it sideways to make your adjustments it becomes confusing. As it turns out, if you adjust the stand while the desktop is in its functioning orientation, i.e. when the desktop is parallel to the table surface, -45 degrees is clockwise from 0 degrees on one dial and -45 degrees is counter clockwise from zero on the corresponding dial. The simple alternative the manufacturer could have used in marking these dials is to have the labeled marks running from 0 degrees(/360 degrees) to 330 degrees. That way there wouldn't be any question as to whether one mark was at the 120 degree point or at the -120 degree point.By the way, trying to set up the stand by eyeball, without using those degree marks at all, ends up being a little harder to do than I might have thought.I suppose other stands may have this same problem with the degree marks so maybe my three star rating is a little unfair. This stand otherwise has met my expectations and at $39.90 it is priced competitively.

It's okay
It's a little bit wobbly when extended to even a moderate height. Takes some effort to extend and lower and can't be done with the laptop in place. Functionally it's not much better than the cardboard box I was using for a makeshift standup platform, but it sure looks a lot cooler.
