Q: Is the opening for the picture 5x7, or is that just the space inside the black frame?

The photo area is 5x7. The entire frame is much larger. It fits a 5x7 photo without covering any Disney characters.

Q: Is this frame deep enough to hold collectible pins? How deep is the shadow box?

The frame has glass flush with the backing and can hold a 5 x 7 picture. I think that they call it a shadowbox because some of the characters are painted on the glass, but it will not hold collectible pins. That being said, it is great quality, well done with great attention to details - frames a picture of family at Disney beautifully! Good value and I was so delighted with mine that I ended up buying two more for gifts!
