The Org Mode 8 Reference Manual - Organize your life with GNU Emacs

An essential emacs reference
I found two ways to greatly improve my use of emacs and org mode this year. Like many others I've been finding that it is difficult to make sense of the thousand little variations on emacs commands, the irrational, obfuscated keyboard key sequences for "shortcuts", and the worst manual (the emacs manual) that I've ever tried to read. Org mode is a powerful addition to emacs, the design of the commands and the keyboard use is more rational and the manual is much more readable. This month I've been happy to find a solution for cutting through the crazy emacs interface and poor manual -- Spacemacs. Spacemacs with Evil mode has made all of my frustrations with emacs drop away. And this printed copy of the Org Mode 8 manual has proven to be an essential help in using the power of org mode. There's a lot to org mode and I'm starting to use it for writing technical documentation and for literate C programming. Before buying this reference I had the pdf copy and I had the older Org Mode book covering version 7. I do read computer books in pdf but always buy a hard copy if I can find an affordable (usually used) copy. Many times used copies and even old editions are too expensive for me. The hard copy of this Org Mode 8 Reference Manual is very affordable (even for me), it makes it much easier to get into the details of org mode and actually use it, and is much higher quality than I expected. It is printed on letter size, very nice paper of good weight, excellent readability (not too bright white), and good binding. If you are thinking of getting into emacs for your work you might find that Spacemacs, Evil, and Org Mode are the modern way.

I like the texture of the paperback cover
I like the texture of the paperback cover. I also like the size of the printing, and it's nice. I like having the book form over the plain emacs online info guide, for reference.

I love org mode
I love org mode. This book is all on line, but nice to have on paper too. It's my new default mode.I need to figure out how to use org-mode as a minor mode, and how to do my .emacs in org mode and export it both as emacs-lisp and html when I save it.

The Org-Mode Bible
Yeah, you have the documentation online but sometimes you want to feel the paper and have the book. If you worship at the alter of org-mode you probably can learn from this.

Three Stars
Doesn't really offer anything beyond the online manual.

FYI Org Mode 9 is now out
Note that Org Mode 9 is now out, and there's a manual for it. As always, the manual is free online at orgmode dot org.

Just what you might expect
Everyone using org-mode will know the info manual provided with Emacs. This book is basically a printed copy of the info manual. No surprise. Why should you want to pay for something you already have? Maybe you shouldn't.But I did. And I'm fine with my decision :-) Org-mode is a quite powerful package. I prefer reading a (paper) book for an overview and online docs for detail. It is way more comfortable learning concepts and functional scope of a feature set like exporting, working with source code, and so on.The book provides multiple indices for concepts, keys, commands and functions, and variables. The key index feels a bit questionable because it is much easier to look up a key in Emacs using C-h k, but who cares :-)All things considered I enjoy this book.
