A most riveting read!
I can't put it down, it's a page turner for sure! The book is a fascinating narrative providing incredible detail & insight into the experiences of John Tanner. This edition is recommended to anyone and everyone with an interest in early Native American cultures & the interaction with an encroaching white presence. It's filled with adventure, excitement, and intrigue. It will pull you in and keep you there by the second paragraph. It's brutal, gentle, and beautiful. Great edition! (and a great addition to any library - it should be recommended reading for classrooms from Middle school through University, and beyond). An historical gem.

Enlightening
This book not only illustrates the captivity and adoption process of the early eastern and northern Native American tribes so well narrated by the author’s own experiences, but also gives insight into the various tribes’ interactions among themselves. I was amazed at the scope of intertribal relations, from trade and intermarriage to war and family, hardship, deprivation and starvation. The region covered is immense; from the Ohio valley to the Great Lakes, to Hudson’s Bay, west to the upper Missouri and east to the Iroquois country. I highly recommend this book.

Life before social media.
Simply and beautifully written. This book tells the tales of hard living among native peoples. Hunting, trapping, observing, listening and dealing with weather living in the wild. Inspiring.
