Although similar in design and form, the Freenove version of a Robot Car is superior in design and execution. I have read other reviews of this kit and offer some insight to consider.The components are of excellent quality and the fit of the build is simple to assemble with a number of cables which only fit (mate) to the proper ports on the control board greatly reducing the possibility of errors. I have purchased other Freenove kits and bought this one due to their excellent manuals and great customer service (which other companies sorely lack).There should be some attention paid to the fact that this is a kit and not a plug-n-play toy so you must bear this in mind and set your expectations accordingly. It is intended to teach some electronics and software basics while producing a great “toy” in the process. You DO NOT need to program to get this car to work! You have the option to just upload a software package called a “sketch” (although you do have the option to make changes to the code as well). Just follow the instructions which explain everything step by step. However, you do need access to a computer to upload software to the control board on the car and to the remote (this is not rocket science but may be a little intimidating to someone who has never done this before). If it is a present for a child make sure that they are at least 12 years old or have an adult to assist with the build and access to a computer with Internet access to download Arduino IDE (a free open-source safe software system used globally).If you encounter any issues, Freenove Customer Support is very responsive and detailed. I had a problem with the Tracking Mode on this Car (the other 2 modes worked great). The IR Sensor Module was not close enough to the ground to work properly. After contacting Freenove’s Customer Support, regarding the Tracking Mode issue, they informed me that new kits will have an improved chassis plate (like the replacement part I received) and the 4WD Robot Car will no longer have this issue. However, if you have an earlier version I suggest that you contact Freenove as I did.” The replacement part made all the difference and the Robot Car is now fully functional.I highly recommend this Robot car and the other Freenove Kits as well.

I've never seen anything like this robot kit, so I had to have it. I do a lot of robots for STEM, but I came across this more advanced robot and I decided to give it a try.What makes this kit different than nearly every other kit you will find?1. 4 wheel drive. Most have 1 or 2 motors, but this one is fully 4wd.2. Two arduinos. Most kits have one Arduino or controller board, but this one, you build the robot, and then you have a second arduino to build a controller with. I also like that this second part is optional so you can keep the second arduino for new projects and use your phone to control the robot.3. It's up to date. As of this writing, the tutorial pdf is a month old because they've been constantly updating it. The git repo includes everything you need in one zip file.With the 4wd and second arduino, I would call this an "intermediate" kit. It took me a couple of hours and I would say a 12 year old could do it with adult supervision and a 15 year old could tackle it solo.

Really need to put upfront that it takes special batteries that are not cheap or easy to find.

i love how quick it arrived and how quick a first timer like my self i was able to get it together. but after playing with it for a little wile im wondering how or if i can download all files for IR, RF24,and Bluetooth on the cars board and be able to just swap out the chips. and use one of the controllers? any info will help.

The car went together rather easily, however, when trying to add programming for the RGB LED strip lights I have received error messages which hinders me moving forward. This is why I’m giving only a 3 rating. Once I am able to actually finish programming I will revisit this review.

This was a very fun build. It was great getting to understand how to build it from the ground up. I like the way the tutorial is laid out in chapters for building each component in order. There complexity of the program sketch files grew along with it but not to fast (for me anyway).There is a lot of broken English in the tutorial but it was still easy to follow along.Some of the screws are very tiny. They could be tricky for anyone with big fingers or poor control.I wish it was clearer on the Amazon page that the batteries are not included. I had to order them and wait a couple of days before I could fully test my build.

I bought this for my grandkids. I wasn't able to make it work. The remotes didn't work and the led lights would not come on. Couldn't get the car to drive around. Was very disappointed and had to send it back.
