Q: Beginner bass player here. What would be the difference between this bass and a $700 fender jazz bass?

The Fender Jazz Bass plays great, has a unique tone palette, and is very sturdy. They will perform for many trouble-free years. That said, you probably don't need to step up to that level of instrument when you are starting out. These Glarry basses are light, well made, and sound decent too. If you want to experiment, I think it would make a nice platform for upgrade or mods.

Q: The ibanez gsrm20 4-string electric bass looks exactly like the glarry, from pickups to headstock and tuning heads; weird?

Nope it is a Chinese knockoff there are LP's, Grote makes Gibson 335, and IYV Makes a Gibson 175... My personal favorite.... Also Teles and Strats. The headstocks if you look close are different. My Glarry I like better than the Ibanez it is lighter basswood not heavy as a brick. The action is actually better than the real one.!

No, It Does Not Need a Battery. A 1/4" Patch cord is all that is needed to Play this Bass. I really do like Mine, Play it all the time.

Q: Is this too big for a 10 year old?

Yes. This is a full, 34-inch scale instrument. I recommend an Ibanez Mikro bass for a 10-year-old, or if you want a standard scale, get something in a 30-inch scale like those on Gibson's. Good luck to you.
