Q: Does this unit turn on & off without pushing the button? i would like to hook it up to a nest thermostat in my garage. is this possible? thank you

It is thermostatically controlled. However you could not connect your Nest thermostat up to it. The thermostatic controls will be done via the Knob on top.

As Dan mentioned your home should already be regulated at the gas meter which gets regulated before your home. One good way to check - if you have a natural gas stove or boiler check to see if they are piped directly from your home piping gas line or does it go through a regulator then into your appliance. Most homes in the US are set up this way. This is something that can be done rather easy you should be able to connect it yourself. However if your unsure or don’t feel comfortable than you should seek the help of someone that can.

Q: How long does it take for the burning paint smell to stop? I’ve gone thru a whole 20lb tank of gas and still stinks too much to use inside

Ours did it too. It was a couple days before the smell faded. Try running it as high as it will go for a while if you haven't already, then reverting back to normal. It may help.
