Hardwood, well made, sanded smooth, easy to hold by the grip area along the side, and it works like a dream for seams that are truly flat. My method, press the seam, give a shot of steam and lay the clapper on the seam--behold a flat and smooth seam that makes quilting a breeze.Didn't see them in any of the local shops. It sets the seam, draws off the heat and steam, it also seems to prevent some of the fraying or raveling even on homespun.Someone using a tailor's clapper for quilting to flatten open seams. It does that and more! IF U needed a securely pressed hem before I stitched it. This did a beautiful job! It's also about longer than UR iron which works out well.
