What is the internal width of this shelf (not counting the sliding mechanism)? I am trying to fit a 17.5" wide component.

Hi Brian, I cannot get you exact measurement of the shelf until about December 8th, when I'm back in front of it. However I can tell you I've been using the shelf with heavy use for the past year and a half and it is phenomenal, sturdy, and always functions correctly.

How many u does this add to the overall height of the server? if a standard tower server is 5 u laying on its side, will this add a u or two?

While the UNISLDSHF19M mounts in a 2U space, the height of the shelf, from the very bottom of the mounting bracket to the flat shelf where hardware sits is 63mm or ~1.4U. Matt, StarTech.com Support

Can the UNISLDSHF19 be safely mounted upside down (with the metal towards the bottom)? Would that affect its carrying capacity (and how)?

I don't see why not. Appears that it will work either way.

Is this meant to be used as a drawer for small items or a keyboard, or as a shelf? I'm looking for a drawer that would mount in a full rack.

It can be both a shelf OR a drawer, depending on how you mount the rails. If you want a drawer, just flip the shelf over, and attach that way! It's easy!
