Takes the scariness out of learning barre chords
I bought this book as I'd already bought James' theory trilogy last year. I found these to be easily the best books I've read on learning theory. James' writing style and way of explaining things made it a real pleasure to master a potentially daunting subject. This book is the same. Again, his easy style, knowledge and teaching ability really do make learning the basic shapes very straightforward. In chapter one, his explanation of how the "E" shape works makes it a doddle to jump up and down the fretboard applying it to each note. At the very least you do need to know the notes on the low E string, but nothing more in depth is required at this stage. He also shows how easy it is to quickly adapt the major shape into minor and "7" shapes in this chapter. Even at this early stage, you now have a clear pathway to playing hundreds more songs than the basic CAGED chord shapes allow. The subsequent chapters of course follow on in the same style. It's inescapable that the major part of learning barre chords is the physical aspect of barring and fingerings accurately to get that elusive clean sound. The book is full of tips and explanations of what to do and what not to do to achieve this. It won't cut out the hours of work required, but it will ensure that your practice is always focused and on point. At the end of each chapter there is a mini quiz and tracking checklist. The quizzes really do work well in helping reinforce your learning, or to let you know where you need to go back and relearn things. There are also downloadable backing tracks, which are ideal for forming and changing chords in a musical way. Much better than using those tedious metronomes, in my opinion.Very highly recommended and I for one will be buying all James' books ASAP.

Barre chords explained with out the bull of other books
This is a very good book to learn the essential technique of learning barre chords required for the guitarist. The book is easy to follow with summary check questions to test your musical comprehension. It starts with the correct positioning of setting a barre chord and what poor positioning looks like. James then moves to the essential E and A Shape Barre chords, this is an essential book for mastering the technique of playing clean and buzz free notes It strips the knowledge down to key bite size chunks without swamping you with too much information. The book also provides a link to free downloadable tracks which helps you practice. James Shipway, also publishes the “no bull guitar theory” which I also find excellent.I have also reviewed this book on Amazon.

This book has helped me develop in a way that no other book has.Would recommend it to everyone setting g out.

Great Book
I’m still working through this book at the moment, but so far I have found it to be very good indeed. The instructions are clear and the video lessons that back the book up are very well presented. I really like the fact that it is made very clear you won’t get the chords straight away and that you need to build up strength in your fingers. So I’m working through the book slowly. I love the presentation of this book. The instructions are clear and fully explained, with good clear photos as well. In fact I’ve enjoyed this book so much that I have invested in the ‘The Blues Soloing’ and the ‘Music Theory for Guitarists 3 books in 1, all in the No Bull series. For me this book ticks all the boxes I need.

Very thorough
I have found it difficult to learn barre chords but this book has helped a lot and I can now manage the E and A shape barre chords fairly well. I struggle with some of the D shape chords though but this is mainly because of the finger stretching required.
