Hands-On Math Projects with Real-Life Applications, Grades 3-5

Great multi-level/age/grade resource
I have third to sixth grade students in my classroom, they are talented, gifted and highly motivated. We use the projects in this book in conjunction with traditional as well as hands-on activities to cover curriculum and standards. The projects in this book are simple and straightforward enough for my younger students to understand and open ended enough to allow the older children the opportunity to go beyond the suggested activity. We have done the projects independently, in partnerships and in small groups. They present their projects to each other when completed. We're currently, doing the math newsletter activity which will become part of a schoolwide newspaper we are creating. The book is designed to link math to other disciplines: science, social studies, language arts, etc. Their final projects are often so thoughtful and well constructed that I include them in our class portfolio. When they complete one project, they beg for the next!

Good
The thing I like about this book is that the projects are do-able. They don't require the type of materials that parents would have to scour the town to find. The projects can be completed independently by the students after having gotten a proper introduction and example. They are also relevant. Thanks. I love it when someone else comes up with good ideas I can use.

Great ideasa
A very good book. Many of the projects are at the upper end of the age range but could be adapted for lower levels. Can't wait to try them all!

Practical and usable
This resource makes sense in the teaching and learning of basic facts. The key questions for each fact group can easily be used to assess students understanding of those facts and multiplication in general. Certainly a resource I wished I had used years before now.

Good teachers already have thought of these ideas
No need to buy this item if you feel you are a "good teacher". The ideas are simplistic, for instance, a math journal...come on now, I think that we don't need a book to tell us about this one.

Fun!
Lots of real life math scenarios and fun, open ended activities that stretch into other subjects, like social studies and life skills!

Good resource!
I’ve been using these both in the classroom and for the distance learning with some modifications. Really awesome book and great projects included. Kids are super excited about several of them!

Not really 'hands on'
I returned this because I really was looking for hands on projects. This has a lot of good stuff, just not what I was looking for. This book has a lot of practical pencil to paper projects.
