Works Great - Good Value
The product seems to work well. I had been searching for an in-wall timer that 1) worked, 2) didn't fail after a few weeks or months, and 3) could self-adjust with the seasons. The ST01 seemed to fill the bill, and others' generally favorable reviews convinced me to buy two of them, one each for the front porch and back porch lights. My lights are CFLB's, and the timer handles them just fine (note: not all timers will work with fluorescent lighting). It was easy to wire them in (I was replacing simple single-pole switches), so installation was no problem. However, if you're not electrically savvy, you would be well-advised to enlist the services of a qualified electrician, so that it gets done "right".The device is battery powered (it's NOT powered by the 110V supply into which you're wiring it). Being battery-powered makes it convenient to set up and program PRIOR to installation, as suggested in the instructions. The battery is in a little drawer that slides out from the front of the unit, so it's easy to replace. However, it's an unusual battery, so be forewarned; it's not your typical AA or AAA cell. The written instructions are "OK", but there's a LOT of "fine print", and it can be difficult to follow all of the steps required to set up and program the device. A much BETTER alternative is to watch and follow the online video (available on Intermatic's website and on YouTube). The video takes your through the setup and programming procedure, and makes it much easier to complete the sequence of "steps" required.A couple of caveats: First, in one setup step, you select the "zone". I erroneously assumed that "zone" referred to "time zone". Not. They divide the US into "zones" by lattiitude: North, Center, and South. There's a little map included in the printed instructions that illustrate these zones, and you simply select the one for the area in which you live. I live in Texas, which is in the South zone.Second (I overlooked this both in the instructions and the video), if you're going to use the astral capability of the timer, you need to specify YOUR times for DAWN and DUSK. The assumed times (based solely on zone selection) are probably not correct for where you live. You can get the actual times for sunrise and sunset in your locale from a number of sources, including online, a TV weather report, or an app on your phone. Once you know the actual times of sunrise (DAWN) and sunset (DUSK) you enter these as part of the timer's programming sequence.Once you've gone through it a couple of times, you get the hang of the programming sequence, and it's really not that difficult. So once you've installed it and have it working, you can make adjustments to tweak it to your liking. I did this and the timers now turn the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. Presumably, as the seasons change (e.g., the days get longer), the on/off times of the lights will change accordingly.Note: This timer has other features not covered here, such as automatic switchover to DST, multiple on/off times, random on/off times, etc. It seems to be a pretty robust device, feature-wise. Chances are, it will handle whatever application you have in mind. All in all, I'm quite happy. I'm writing this review only two weeks after having installed my timers, so time will tell. ;-)

Reliable, easy install, long life. No neutral wire required.
I first installed this switch in 2014. It has faithfully worked for 9 years, and has kept its programing through multiple power outages.Earlier this week it did not come on at dusk as usual, and I couldn't turn it on manually either. I feared the worst, but fortunately a new battery (CR2 3V) solved the problem. I had never changed that battery since I installed the switch, which is pretty amazing. As others have said, it can be a challenge to program, but Intermatic has a very good step by step video on how to do that here on Amz.I really recommend this switch, both for it's longevity and ease of installation. I ordered a second one to keep on hand if this one ever does fail. It's almost impossible to find a timer switch that really doesn't require a neutral wire, and this one doesn't.The only minor gripe is that the switch will not work at all with a dead battery. It would be nice if it would just default to a manual mode if the battery is dead. But with a 9 year battery life, I really can't complain.

Very Good Wall Timer For CFL Bulbs
About a dozen years ago, I installed two Intermatic EJ351 wall switches to automatically turn my outdoor garage and front door lights on/off. At that time, I was using regular incandescent bulbs. The EJ351 timers were easy to program and worked great. A couple years ago, I changed the bulbs from incandescent to CFL type for energy savings reasons. The timers programmed on/off settings would vary greatly each day and needed to be reprogrammed about every week. I checked the Intermatic website and found the EJ351 model timer was not rated for CFL bulbs.Since I had great long lasting service from the Intermatic EJ351 timers, I decided to stick with the brand to find a model compatable with CFL bulbs. It was found that there were two basic types- one requiring a hot and ground connection and the other just the hot wires. I wanted an easy installation, so I chose the only hot wire type, which is how a normal wall switch is wired. With this type, an internal battery is needed in the switch for program memory in case of power outagesAmazon had two different models I was interested in- the Intermatic ST01 and the ST01C. At different times, one is priced slightly higher than the other, then switch over in pricing. There was not an explaination of the difference in these models. I went again to the Intermatic website and located the ST01, but could not find the ST01C, so I assumed it was an older model.I bought one ST01 to try it. The installation was easy, but there are numerous programing steps. If you miss one, the timer will not program as required. My first attempt failed, so I gave it another try. The second attempt was successful. After about a week in service, I bought another ST01 from Amazon. They are now both installed and work great. I really like the feature that changes your on/off settings slightly each day with the seasonal dusk to dawn times. The units have been working now for about a month without any issues. I do not know how long the replaceable memory battery will last, but it's rated for a year.Other than the numerous programing steps and the very primitive looking LCD display, I would have given this unit 5 stars. Otherwise once the unit is programmed and working, it does the job and thought that 4 stars was a the proper Amazon rating for this product. As always has been my experience, Amazon itself always in my book is 5 stars.

Great unit. Needs better instructions
Instructions were difficult to follow for setting schedule. Unlike its predecessor, turn off time is on a different setting from turn on, (eg it is now “schedule 1 -turn on, schedule 2 -turn off). It used to be schedule 1 on and off all one setting. I called the hot line and a very knowledgeable lady talked me through it in 5 minutes. They need to be more explicit in the last part of the instruction sheet. The unit itself is excellent. I appreciate it being able to turn on at sunset and off at 11PM saving electricity with the varying day length. PFS

How did I manage without this before?
The best less-than-50-dollars I think I've ever spent. It's been working great for over a year or so. Even if it dies tomorrow (which I doubt) I'll get another one immediately. So nice to leave in the morning, get home in the dark and see where exactly where the front-door key goes.
