MSR Hubba Hubba 1-Person Lightweight Backpacking Tent

You pay a premium for this bike-packing tent over a more common backpacking tent. The difference is a slightly smaller package due to sorter pole segment lengths. Is it worth the price? That’s a tough call. But it is a very good very lightweight tent

Great little tent. Rained half the night the first night of use and kept me totally dry. I'm 6 ft 3" had room to spare. Breaks down super easily and easy to pack on a motorcycle. A+

I was splinting the poles on day 4 of a 14 day trip. The tent is great but bring some tape and extra tent stakes for splints. The coupling unit inside the poles will slide too far in to snap in place. Did this in 3 spots by day 14 of my trip. Other than that I loved the tent.

I’m sorry. This new MSR Hubba-for-One is not worth it. I had my last Hubba-for-One for seven years before “hydrolysis” and seam tape separation got it. I still keep it around for sentimental reasons. I am in Greece now and have used this new tent intermittently on bicycle tour around Mediterranean for a couple months.Pro: Extremely light! I’m on a bike, not hiking, so weight is a consideration but not paramount.Pro: Poles will likely never break. They’re fiberglass this time.Con: Not all that waterproof. Rain fly is somewhat porous even new.Con: Rain fly hemmed really high. Leaves rain to run over tent the last 6 inches at each end. Infiltration dampness occurs.Con: Not durable enough. Stitching all around is good but just light abrasion makes wear holes.Con: Super thin “tub” base offers little puncture protection. Aftermarket MSR ground pad doesn’t add much and doesn’t quite fit.Personal Con: Always bright inside. Never darkens with white and tan nylon. If around night lighting or Summer Solstice the issue is not trivial.So, you can go with a heavy, expensive, bombproof Hilleberg or a sleepover grade, disposable K-Mart. This middling MSR tent does not satisfy.Update: A better stealth 1 1/2 person alternative is the Big Agnes Crag Lake SL2. Doesn’t have the obvious red bathtub. Is all olive green. Two doors. Intelligently bigger. And is HALF the price. I’m kind of over MSR.

I have not yet tried out the tent in the rain or wind but it looks like it should do the job. It is about 1 kg lighter than the tent it is replacing!

My first impression was very good. It is light, spacious, beautiful, and comfortable.But after a week-long hike in the mountains, my opinion drastically changed.1) After only 7 days, the tent arc segments broke: the longest, central part consists of sections connected by aluminum tubes. These aluminum parts constantly slide inside the arcs, and there is no way to move them.Finding yourself without a tent in the middle of a forest hiking is terrible!2) During hiking, small rain and morning dew on the tent is normal. But after coming home, I saw faded spots in several places on the lower inner part of the tent.3. The tent fly had a terrible odor.
