Pallanghuzi, or Pallankuli (பல்லாங்குழி in Tamil,"ಅಳಗುಳಿ ಮನೆ" or Alaguli Mane in Kannada, vamana guntalu in Telugu, പല്ലാങ്കുഴി in Malayalam, "सत्कोलि" or Satkoli in Marathi), is a traditional ancient mancala game played in South India especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Later the games were spread to other places including Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in India as well as, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Variants are called as Ali guli mane (in Kannada), Vamana guntalu (in Telugu), and Kuzhipara (in Malayalam).[1] The game is played by two players, with a wooden board that has fourteen pits in all (hence the name from the words fourteen pits (pathinaalam kuzhi). There have been several variations in the layout of the pits, one among them being seven pits on each player's side. The pits contain cowry shells, seeds or small pebbles used as counters.[2] There are several variations of the game depending on the number of shells each player starts with. This game is popular among the kids and old people. This game is encouraged for the kids to learn to count, to improve eye–hand coordination and concentration while playing. And for the older people of the house, to spend time in the company of the young members of the family.[6] Pallanguzhi is also played in Sri Lanka, Trinidad, Guyana and Singapore, with a sizable Tamil-Indian population living in those countries. Ancient Tamils during their Chola expedition and Trading with Indonesian Islands ( Sumetra, Java ) took this game there. In Indonesia, this is known as Congkak or Congklakin
