Excellent Mid-Level AVR, Simple Setup
The Denon AVR-S660H replaced an aging Onkyo AVR, and it’s an excellent upgrade. The on-screen setup was very easy to follow, the Audyssey calibration worked well, and features such as Apple Airplay and Internet Radio are great.I’m not using gaming or an advanced TV, so the 8k, eArc, and support for HDMI 2.1 weren’t really tested, but it’s nice to have them if I upgrade any other components. I did replace all of the HDMI cables with new 2.1 cables, some of those old cables were fifteen years old.The Audyssey calibration kit includes a tall cardboard mic stand that resembles a three stage rocket, that was fun to assemble, and simple to use.The receiver uses HEOS for support of streaming audio sources, but I’m happy with just my Apple Music and the internet radio. I didn’t bother attaching the FM or AM antennas as I will never use the tuner. The video from cable, Roku, and DVD is excellent, and the audio provides an immersive 5.1 experience with very clear center dialogue and well balanced surround sound. My speakers are older small bookshelf with a powered sub, so it’s not a concert hall experience, but the sound is balanced and warm, and AirPlay is a real step-up from Bluetooth in overall audio quality. The online owners manual runs 208 pages, so there’s a lot of setup options, but I just wired the speaker and sub connections, plugged in the HDMI cables for the cable, Roku, DVD and TV, followed the on-screen setup instructions , and then ran the Audyssey calibration. Users who love to tinker will no doubt be able to adjust dozens and dozens of settings, but to me the Denon did a good enough job on its own.I got this AVR as an Amazon Warehouse deal on Prime Day for 60% off the list price, making it a great value and upgrade. The unit was brand new, all original packaging and accessories, so I guess I got lucky.

Excellent sound.
I bought a Denon surround sound system 15 years ago. The original receiver lasted 10 years. A replacement Yamaha receiver lasted only 5. I decided to return to Denon and bought this one. I am very pleased. The receiver comes with a mic that allows you to run a setup that tunes the sound to your room. The initial setup is very user friendly. Directions are displayed on the screen. The system sounds as good or better than the more pricey Yamaha receiver that it replaced. The only negative is that, once setup, it is not as user friendly as the Yamaha was, from a standpoint of selecting the proper component and type of sound (surround, stereo etc). However, I think I can fix this by programming some of the quick select choices and plan to do that.Overall, the receiver sounds great. There is no hiss and music and movies are great. The sound in my house is better than most movie theaters. The bottom line is that this receiver is relatively inexpensive, but the quality of the sound is exceptional.

Good value
Sounds really nice. Replaced a 10 yr old receiver that was part of a theater in a box combo. The old speakers connected to this easily using some banana plugs and I had to get a new sub since my old one was not self powered but otherwise very easy. This one sounds better than my old system. Noticeable improved surround on this one with the same space and speaker layout. Nice to have everything video go through this receiver so I can just turn on the tv and everything turns on at once. Don’t have to use two remotes anymore. Also I can select Spotify on my phone and airplay directly to the sound receiver. The box turns on automatically and sound is nice and full. Also lots of different sound profiles to switch between for your preference and do it right on the remote so it’s easy. Box does get hot but not terrible like some ppl said. This is normal for a receiver. Lots of vents on the top of the chassis.

Great Product, great service
I wanted a name brand budget friendly surround sound system that would sound good with movies and music and included wifi. So far this unit has met all my expectations. Like the HEOS app for music options.Purchased one and it did have issues with the surround sound speakers not working. Worked with their product support and they did recommend returning after a short amount of testing. Ordered a replacement and returned the bad one. Giving 5 stars for sound, options, and the ease of working with support

Didn't work for me
Spent a lot of time looking for a replacement of my Onkyo theater reciever and this checked the boxes. However after 2 days I decided to return it. All the correct cabling, all the correct hookups, all the correct TV settings..........couldn't get the 5 surround speakers to work properly (I have a subwoofer as well but not hooked up during this setup). Still not sure but thinking the problem was that I have a roku streaming sound bar for my streaming input. This "seemed" to confuse the receiver for which speakers were the "surround" speakers as the sound bar has a left and right speaker embeded in it. The receiver speaker identification setup sequencing correctly buzzed each of the 5 surround speakers but would not relay audio thru them. As a last resort I removed the roku streaming sound bar and reinstalled the old roku streaming module (no sound bar). This magically allowed audio to pass thru to the 5 speakers.........but, the leveling for each speaker thru the remote took several selections thru a nested layering. My old Onkyo was super easy thru the remote. Add to that I couldn't get the leveling to be anywhere close to ok from speaking levels transitioning to action. That's when I gave up and packaged the unit for return. Could be I messed up somewhere but I don't think so and I couldn't find any guidance to give me hope. If anyone has info regarding streaming sound bar compatibility with theater receivers , please advise...Thanks
