Convenience
The answer to the first question is yes, the world still needs CD and DVD disks, despite the fact that almost everything can be downloaded and uploaded to the cloud. A lot of software is still sold on physical media and who wants to bother going through our libraries of disks we have accumulated to transfer them to other forms of storage media. I own a very powerful HP mini graphics workstation that is about as large as 10 CD cases stacked on top of each other but is more powerful than most ordinary desktop computers. As a photographer, cinematographer and graphics designer I have access to powerful studio editing tools but these days of work at home I need something powerful in my home office, and this mini workstation does the job. I can’t compromise by using low quality accessories with it but let’s face reality, despite what some manufacturers are trying to push, the CD and DVD media is what it is, in other words it’s not going to get faster or better by attaching a USB-C connector to it. When you shop through the hundreds of available burners you are probably right is suspecting that they are all made of the same basic components and probably originate in one of a handful of Chinese factories. I chose this one because it has one of the highest number of positive reviews – that helps me weed out the ones that are paid for and the others that come from disgruntled individuals who didn’t understand what they were buying and believe that there are still about a thousand customers who like it.CHOICESYour choices are mostly limited these days to a full size drive that you install in your desktop tower or one of two styles of compact units designed to travel with your laptop – either the type with a pop open drawer, which is about 95% of those sold, and this type with a slot drive. They both do the same job. Of the choices available I wanted one that was the most convenient for a minimalistic desktop. I have just enough room on top of my workstation to fit this device and I like that there is a large circular rubber ring to help keep it from sliding around or vibrating, you usually find four little rubber feet instead (but see the reality check about this ring in my summary). So all things considered, if you are plugging it in and want to have the easiest access, this seems to be the best overall choice.OPERATIONUnlike the old days, this doesn’t come with a suite full of software tools and I’m glad. Most of what I need are built in to my workstation’s Windows 10 Pro operating system or my MacBook Pro’s toolkit and if I need anything else I would rather made that choice myself. The drive is surprisingly nicely made and to me it looks identical to another brand that goes for twice as much. The disk insertion and ejection is smooth and quiet and in use there is very little vibration. Be aware that there are no buttons or status lights of any kind which is expected if you are a Mac user but Windows users will have to get used to using the disk eject tool on their keyboard rather than on the drive itself. The cable is permanently attached at the device end and has a USB-2.0 connector at the cable end which is 12 inches long. They include an adapter to plug it in to a USB-C port and in either case the drive is supposed to be powered by your computer. If you plug it in to an older USB 2.0 port you might run into a situation where it doesn’t have enough power for the drive but these days that would be considered uncommon. Note that I said that the cable attached to the device is USB 2.0, you may wonder why this drive is advertised as a USB 3.0 device – it’s not, the little adapter that allows it to be plugged into that port has no electronics in it and does not convert the data signal to make it faster. This is a common hype of these drives which are actually old technology, CD’s and DVD’s were never designed to operate at today’s blazingly fast speeds and technically there is no such thing as a USB 3.0 drive. Don’t worry this one is as fast as anyone needs to be compatible with optical drive media.COMPATIBILITYThe list of compatible formats is on this page, which by the way would benefit from having them pay a few bucks for a better English translator. I can’t test them all of course, but so far there is nothing I’ve run across that didn’t work flawlessly. Disk burning was fast and so far I haven’t ended up with any coasters at all.YES OR NOWhat this has going for it is after all discounts it was the lowest price slot load model available and had the highest number of valid positive reviews. It looks good, the quality of construction is above average and it works at least as well as I expected it to. This is one of those things I can plug in and forget, it works and is convenient to use. I’m tempted to ding them a point because of the misinformation about the unit’s connectivity and also because the good idea of a rubber ring to keep it from slipping around actually didn’t work out as well as I expected, the ring is too far recessed into the circular slot it’s in to be able to touch the desktop, rendering it useless. I had to glue four little feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding all over. The bottom line is this thing isn’t perfect but it does work without taking up a huge amount of my desktop. If you’re baffled by the sheer number of choices available for CD and DVD external drives I suggest you consider this one.

Alas, didn't work for me (Updated from 2 to 5 stars)
I bought this to install a program on my laptop running Windows 10. Plugged it in and the computer recognized the drive. I inserted my program disk, heard the drive spin up and then... nothing. Worse, it wouldn't eject the disk.I tried the suggestions on the very scant instruction sheet that came with the drive (check in My Computer, reboot, etc.) without any luck. That left me with my program disk stuck in the drive.I suppose the good thing is that the drive is inexpensive enough that I didn't feel too bad about breaking it open to get the program disk out.In fairness to the vendor I didn't try to contact them for support (and the package didn't list a web site or contact information anyway). I just wanted to get my program installed. I borrowed an LG drive from a friend and the installation went without a hitch - plug-and-play simple. Kind of the way I was hoping this would work.It appears that most people have had good luck with this drive so it may work out that way for you. It didn't for me so I wanted you to know that it's not a sure thing.Update: I've increased my rating from 2 to 5 stars based on the vendor's response offering support. As I mentioned, I didn't try to contact them before I wrote my review. They proactively reached out to me offering to do whatever was necessary to make things right.I was already satisfied with the drive I borrowed so I didn't take them up on their offer. Still, I'm impressed that they've contacted me several times. Excellent customer service counts for a lot in my book.Given all the other positive reviews and my experience with their follow up support I think you can order this with confidence. Because of this I've upped my rating.I would suggest that the seller include more detailed instructions with the drive, as well as an obvious way to contact customer support.

Complete Junk
This was fine, until after sitting in a drawer untouched for a few months it no longer worked. Seller says they'll look at it after I send it back at my own expense. Consider how cheap it is, no thanks. I hate to throw things out but they could at least pay for the return postage. It's obviously a pice of junk but I should have known better.Update: The company actually sent me a new drive without having to return the defective one. I managed to rip a total of 2 discs before it failed to eject a disc leaving it stuck (there is no little eject hole) rendering this one useless as well. 2 drives from these guys and both failed after only a handful of uses. They're junk; please avoid.

Great product for great price
I really wanted an external disc drive for my mac that would allow me to import my CDs from years ago. All I had to do was plug this into my USB port with the USB-C adapter it came with and that's all! I was a little confused at first because you have to insert the disc pretty far into the drive for it to pull it in and recognize it, so that worried me. But once it pulled it in I had no issues and it worked smoothly!

Poor design
A DVD I was using would not eject. I tried everything to no avail. There is no tiny hole to force eject so I had to take the unit apart to get to my disk which I needed. I suggest anyone that wants an external disk drive to make sure it has an external eject button.I need to update the one star review to a 5 because the seller read my first review and responded to me directly within a few days. They offered to send me a new unit even though it had been over the 90 days. (actually almost two years since I purchased it). Since I had already purchased a new one they are giving me a credit. The unit may have issues to deserve a one star but this company deserves a 5+ for their customer service. I would definitely purchase from them again. Cheers to VersionTach!!

Good but not great.
I only have a problem with 2 things with this device. The lack of an eject button sucks.Sometimes Win10 won't let me eject it because the disc can't be read and it crashes Windows Explorer till I disconnect the player.
