Q: How do i compress them? they are extended and won't compress at all.

You install them fully extended. They are made to hold up a rear hatch, so with out that weight on them it would take a lot of force to compress one. If they do not compress once installed, either they are bad units or you got a set made for a heavier hatch. I put a set on my Toyota mini-van and they work great.

Q: Do these struts come with the mounting brackets to attach to the van's body? One illustration shows the brackets included; the others don't.
