The Credibility Code: How to Project Confidence and Competence When It Matters Most

This barnburner, page-turner of a book is oriented toward presenting oneself credibly in business, but the subject is cross-platform: business, personal, familial, romantic. It's not as if, once I'm aware that better than 90% of what I'm saying is conveyed with body language, I can revert to unaware. And if 90%+ of the message I am attempting to convey is physical: tone of voice, pacing and volume of speech, gesture, stance and posture, fidget frequency, eye contact, the way I hold my face? It's a lot to leave to luck. It's leaving money, friendship, and love on the table. The good Ms. Hale Alter won't let that happen to you.Body language has the force of law. Everyone is subject to its effects, but it’s possible to go beyond the default of subconscious, unconsidered body language to leverage it consciously. If you're not aware of what your body language is communicating, you may consistently, randomly sabotage the self you want to present. If you are aware of it, you immediately have a head-and-shoulders edge over those who do not entirely understand the power of face-to-face. Or if they do, they don't know, like you will after reading The Credibility Code, how entirely teachable this aspect of being is.

Other books of this type tend to take an inside to outside approach: you're told to use visualization to work on internal attributes (confidence, charisma, etc), and that the rest will more-or-less follow. This book approached it from the opposite direction: your told to focus on adopting specific external behaviors and habits. I noticed that in following these instructions, the effect was immediate and dramatic, and it was shocking for me to realize that a few simple changes in my body language could have such a dramatic impact on how I'm treated- by both strangers and people I've known for years. This book is one of the best books in this class that I've read, and I will be reading it again soon.

I wish more books were like this. The chapters are short not because they lack content but because they break down important concepts into only their most important parts. As a result, this is an effective and easy to read primer on nonverbal communication.The videos at the end of each chapter are excellent too. It's one thing to read about the importance of strong posture. But seeing how much just a slight slouch takes away from authority drives the point home.I still can't get over how good this book is. It's the perfect primer on nonverbal communication.

This is a great book that goes directly to those things that you need to be aware of when trying to project credibility. While it is focused on form and not content, form does make a difference. We've all had the experience of meeting someone in a meeting that seemed to know a lot but they left you unsure of their credibility. This book helps you understand how you can better prepare yourself to project confidence, avoiding the common pitfalls that many speakers suffer from. Having read the book, I now catch myself as I start to make those mistakes that often send the wrong message to your audience. Speaking too fast, avoiding eye contact etc., these and many other habits described in the book that often undermine your presentation.

This is a good foundation for aspiring leaders. I have studied and practiced leadership both in the military and in corporate life and much of what is said here is common across the board. I have to say this is readable and easily adopted, so it would be a good foundational book for those looking to expand their careers.

Just getting through half of the book was helpful for me. I had a very important presentation to deliver in front of some very important people. By the time presentation day rolled around, I was only halfway through the book. But I applied the advice given in the first half and I must say it worked! The key is is drill down on each thing you are trying to improve on. Practice practice practice!

I don't write many reviews but I just finished "The Credibility Code" and I felt compelled to review it. As a woman, as a professional, I find this book, hands down, the most immediately and easily useful book I have ever read. It is 160 pages of high impact, gold ladened pearls, worth many times the little money and time I spent. I want to read it over and over 'til I've memorized it and practice everything in it until I am transformed by it. Do yourself a favor and Read This Book!

I first heard about the author and this book when I came across her Talks at Google session on YouTube. This session gives you a very good flavour of the book and the author's style. She defines her codes of conduct and shows what impact you have when you do or don't follow them. The book is easy to digest. Nevertheless, the summary videos at the end of each chapter that you can access on her website are a great companion. The exercises suggested throughout the book are not too intimidating or ridiculous. Overall, this is the most helpful, actionable book of this genre that I have come across so far.

This book goes through great exercises to help people understand how they are being perceived by others and why they may not be getting the reaction they expected. And it shows how to resolve those issues so that you can project the image you desire the other side to see.One of the most useful business books I've read in a long time.

I enjoyed this book. Easy to read and the videos are excellent. I'm looking forward to practicing some of the skills.
