A little lightweight but cute
REVIEWcw: mentions of death, brief mention of tortureWhen down on her luck Cassie Greenberg needs a cheap new place to live, she can't believe her luck when she spots an ad for a room in a highly desirable area of Chicago for only $200. It looks too good to be true but desperation wins through. So what if her new roommate is a bit odd? Sure, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is tall and handsome, even if he talks like he's an extra in Bridgerton. There's an immediate spark between him and Cassie. But he's also keeping a huge secret. This was an easy, relatively drama-free romcom, and I liked the characters a lot, even though Cassie was quite possibly one of the most naive characters I've ever read. Still, I felt for her whenever she put herself down over her art and lack of perceived success. Her passion for art was beautifully written, and I particularly loved how she translated this to her encouragement of children.Frederick was so cute! I loved his to-do list, as well as all his diary entries and letters to Cassie. He was so earnest and yet also so literal as he was learning about modern life. The 'sauce' pan questions were hilariously adorable, and the visit to Nordstrom made me laugh and swoon in equal measure. But I loved how supportive he was of Cassie, and how genuinely gone he was for her.I loved the slow-burn. I particularly enjoyed the scene where they watched Buffy together and Frederick's subsequent Google searches were adorably hilarious. As for his love of Crash Landing on You, well, he had excellent taste in TV. His kumquat conjuring was also so cute. While they were fun together, I never got the sense that Cassie ever really considered the long-term repercussions of becoming involved with a centuries-old vampire. We got brief mentions of her parents, but they were never part of the story. However, her friendship with Sam and his husband Scott was very much part of it. I loved Sam and Scott. They seemed very centring and I loved that they looked out for Cassie. But she never tells them about Frederick. That seemed a bit odd to me for supposed best friends, even given Sam's initial hesitancy at her taking the room.Reginald, Frederick's frenemy (I still need more details about that by the way) was hilarious. I cackled laughing at the welcome mat, and his text threads with Frederick were brilliant. I see he's the MMC in the next book, so I look forward to reading his story. The conflict was thankfully brief if a bit bizarre, but I loved Cassie's ingenuity and Nanmo's sassy email response. While the denouement was sweet, I felt the book ultimately side-stepped a LOT of the realities of pursuing a relationship with an immortal, especially in the epilogue. I know this was a frothy rom-com, but I'd have loved more scenes where they actually talked about the hard stuff, not simply saying they would in the future. As such it missed its mark a little for me.Ultimately this was a little lightweight, but cute.Overall Rating: ❤️❤️❤️.5Heat Rating: 🔥🔥

A good light hearted read!
Really enjoyed this light, gentle, warm hearted, sexy vampire romantic comedy. It isn’t the most intellectually challenging of reads, but quite often I just want a good story, well told, with characters who are interesting and likeable. Even the sex is pitched in a way that is properly descriptive without being offensive in any way, whether you’re more into men than women or the other way around. Loved the ideas behind it. Possibly they got off a bit too easily when the vampire community thing became a challenge, but that’s being picky. Read it over three days, and immediately pre-ordered the sequel that comes out in a few weeks. Look forward to seeing where the story and the characters go from here!

Impressive from a debut, just hoped for a bit more.
— 3 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️"Over the past two weeks I've discovered that in this city of millions, you are one of a kind."📖 | 340 pages👤 | author Jenna Levine🏢 | publisher Penguin📅 | release date 29 August 2023What you can expect:— First-person POV— Forbidden romance— Roommates-to-Friends-to-lovers— Close proximity— He falls first (and harder)— "Who did this to you"— Slow-burn (but still elements of insta-love)— Minimal spice— Opposites attract— LQBTQIA side-charactersMy Roommate is a Vampire is a paranormal romantic comedy by debut author Jenna Levine. Cassie Greenburg is a struggling artist who is in desperate need of a new place to live after being handed an eviction notice by her current landlord. A listing in search of a roommate showcasing a beautiful apartment in a notable location catches Cassie's attention due to its minimal asking price in rent. Expecting it to be too good to be true, Cassie is hesitant to respond to the ad until her best-friend encourages her to at least look at the building. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is an unusual and eccentric man who dresses as if it's the 19th century, sleeps all day and "works" throughout the night. He has no idea what cooking untensils are, and seems to have no grasp on basic modern technology. Desperation has Cassie moving into the apartment, and Frederick's unusualness is further confirmed when Cassie accidentally happens upon his stash of blood bags in the fridge. Suddenly everything Cassie knows is not what it seems... and yet makes perfect sense. Her roommate is a vampire. This book was a really sweet, paranormal rom-com that in my opinion would have been better marketed as YA. With only one or two scenes with explicit sexual content, which were written really well, could have easily been written closed-door to better suit the Young Adult market. My reasoning for this is despite the minimal spice, My Roommate is a Vampire reads rather young. All characters are adults, however their mannerisms and decision-making skills don't reflect their age.Frederick was the star of this book for me. After an unfortunate incident resulted in a century-long coma Frederick has woken up in the modern world with zero clue on how to navigate it. There is nothing more dangerous for a vampire than to stand-out and risk detection, therefore Frederick is in desperate need of a roommate who can teach him the ways of the modern-world and how to better fit in. Despite his need for blood to survive, Frederick is your classic cinnamon-roll MMC. He was an absolute sweetheart, and it was fun to read as he battled his obvious attraction for Cassie in-spite of his 19th century ideals around women and courtship. I would've loved to have read some scenes in his POV. Frederick is quickly devoted to Cassie and is nothing but supportive and encouraging of her art, even if he doesn't particularly understand it, and constantly pushes Cassie to chase her dreams. It was sweet, and made him an instant likable love interest for me.Cassie was... okay. I can't lie, for an FMC she wasn't my favourite to read about. Considering how close Cassie was to being homeless (or at least couch surfing) she seemed content enough to nit-pick Frederick's living space. Fair enough, the décor was a bit outdated and he had no pots and pans (at this point she didn't know about his vampirism) however Cassie felt too-comfortable to complain about somebody that was giving her the deal of a century. I definitely sensed a lot of entitlement surrounding Cassie's approach to aspects in her life, and overall it made it difficult to empathise with her day-to-day struggles. Other than her passion for her art I personally found Cassie's character to lack depth. Not once does she openly encourage Frederick to remain authentic to himself whilst learning about the modern world. Whilst teaching him how to adapt Cassie seemed to encourage Frederick to change just-about every aspect that made up who he was. It didn't sit well with me, personally. The chemistry between Cassie and Frederick was definitely there. Frederick quickly became doted and simp-y towards Cassie, and treated her as-if she hung the moon. Frederick opened Cassie's eyes to an entirely new world and helped her embrace change in her life. Frederick's care and devotion was definitely the winning aspect of this relationship for me.The world itself is very simple and would have better benefitted with more expansion and supernatural lore. I often found myself with questions and noticing gaps in the plot that could have been better explored. We learn that Frederick was turned into a vampire during a war. And his mother is also a vampire. Is his mother his biological mother who was turned, and then turned him? Or is it a found-family element with a species that outlived their human relatives and chose one-another to not be alone for eternity? There was also a mention of vampire hunters that I expected to become the source of conflict and it just... wasn't? The conflict within this story felt very quick and easy to be resolved, and overall this story felt superficial due to the lack of depth.Don't get me wrong, this story was still fun, light-hearted and easy to read that I recommend reading between books. I read it in one sitting, and it had it's swoon-worthy moments. I have nothing but respect for the author and wish her nothing but success with her debut. Unfortunately I was just expecting a little bit more than I was given.

A Quaint Vampire
If you can imagine a rather old fashioned vampire who is far more gentlemanly than other vampires, then you have part of the picture of Frederick. Of course he’s also drop dead gorgeous, pun intended, and has an unfortunate habit of dressing like he came from a ballroom in the last century.Cassie is virtually broke and needs a place to stay and there is a guy advertising a great apartment for almost nothing. There’s either something wrong with it or the guy just doesn’t know any better. It turns out that guy is a vampire who needs someone to teach him about the modern century because he just woke up.This is sometimes cute and funny, sometimes a little boring, has a great spicy scene and not a terrible plot, but not a great one either. The characters are well thought out and that means a lot to me. Four star romantic diversion complete with sappy vampire.

Me encantó!
Es una lectura ligera. Me ha encantado la mezcla de romance contemporáneo con un poco de sobrenatural.

Freddie has my heart and I can’t wait for Reggie’s book🧛🏻♂️
I was very surprised by this book, I admit I bought it cause I found the cover adorable, but to my surprise I ended up loving every single line. It is funny and emotional, I could very well relate to the female character, her hopes and fears and I obviously fell in love with Frederick, a true gentleman who is so clueless about the modern world and this fact only makes it more fun and sweet, you can’t not love him!! Also, the side characters are really really good. Briefly, I didn’t want the book to end ✨

Engaging and a good read
Engaging plot. Quite a unique approach to a rom com. Had a few good laughter and eagerly turned the pages to see what happens next. I needed a little more insight into the background of the main characters, especially Fredrick's. Felt the ending happened too fast. The plot towards the end could have been a little more engaging. Overall it was an engaging one time read.
