Does the job
I needed this to check some ethernet cabling I was installing and it did the job. The unit requires a 9V MN1604 battery, which isnβt supplied, to be fitted before use and then operation is very simple, just plug both ends of the cable in and switch on, the unit then cycles through the connections. The unit is robust enough for home use, recommended.

Great little tester for the price of a sandwich!
Had a problem with one of the two ethernet cables I had run but no idea where the fault lay with eight wires to choose from each end.. This fantastic gadget sequentially lights an led for each wire, the master unit being plugged into one end and the smaller unit the other end. Both light simultaneously at each end and you can choose a slow or faster cycle, It requires a 9v PP3 type battery to operate (not supplied). In my case, the No.1 led wasn't illuminating so the fault was narrowed down to 2 connections out of 16. After reseating the wire each end to no avail I gently pulled on each wire and one came away in my hand. When removing the outer cable casing I had inadvertently sliced into the orange/white wire. It's doubtful if I could have found the fault without this tool and it's amazing value at Β£4.55 with free delivery on Prime. You can check your hard wired cabling and your patch cables with it.

Cheap (good) and nasty (bad)
First, the instructions, in pidgin English, are incomprehensible. Second, I could find no instruction for separating the two parts of this unit and when I did discover how to do it (the remote section slides out if you apply enough force), I drew blood when the sharp plastic slider moulding dug into my hand. Third, the RJ45 connections are flaky and require inordinate force combined with pot luck to get a plug to seat properly. On the other hand, the LEDs all lit up and I assume my first batch of cables are now certified OK. At Β£4 including Prime delivery, this would be a bargain if they had taken a bit more care with it. But considering the forces I am having to apply to a flimsy unit, I can't see it lasting long.

Simple and easy to use, just needs one 9v battery.
This is as simple as cable testers get, but for home/small office use are just fine. The tester simply polls each wire in turn lighting up a numbered led, simply ensure all data LEDs on both ends light in the correct order. If your a professional and need to guarantee network speeds you probably need something a lot more expensive, but for running gigabit around the home this is likely all you need.

Not good for continued long term use.
Got this along with a roll of cat6 cable for making up cables, the battery compartment shattered the first time I tried to open it due to being so brittle, it lasted through testing about 10 cables before the pins on the RJ45 port bent out of position and had to be bent back almost every time we plugged a cable into it. Simply not the right type of metal used in the pins to stand up to repeated use. After testing about 25 cables pin 1 broke completely. Now shopping for a decent version, we've proved its usefulness though. Just too cheaply made to be useful long term or just for very occasional use, if you need it as a one off to make up a few cables then it'll probably last just long enough.

Worked a treat
Used to test new Cat5e cable runs in house. Time saver.

Great
Build is cheap, but works well, if you are intending on using every day, you might want to spend more, but for the money I canβt fault it.
