Brahms -- The Shorter Piano Pieces (Alfred Masterwork Edition) Paperback – November 1, 1987

I have learned to trust Alfred to do a fine job in their composer collections. The copy is clean and readable, the editing by Hinson is excellent and the well-written forward provides an added educational element as I teach piano. Having the bio and historical information adds a dimension of understanding to how the music should be interpreted. I also appreciate the added bonus of cover artwork often from the time period of the composer.

I have been looking for a certain Brahms piece, and, thanks to another reviewer, learned it was in this book. I promptly ordered it. I'm thrilled to have found this book, so reasonablly priced too. My only complaint is that the book came creased and appeared a bit shop-worn. Since it's not a gift, but for me, I decided not to contact Amazon---my books tend to get worn anyway.

I like this edition because of the research and the fingering they provide. This particular edition, dedicated to Brahms shorter pieces is particularly enlightening with reference to fingering his piano pieces. I think the editor has done a superb job.

This is the second Alfred edition I’ve bought on the last month, and while the previous (Ravel’s Miroirs) was helpfully if snarkily edited, this one is not very helpful, and both are printed on cheap paper in cheap bindings.

The sheet music has great preface which gave a in-depth background on Brahms' creative life and motif on these pieces. The pedal points are very helpful!

I was looking for a book with the beautiful Intermezzo in A major and this book had it. I thought shorter works would be good to tackle myself and maybe for students

It is a treasure for my collection.
