Game changing tool to have as a traveler
After experimenting with two other brands, I decided to order the vavus translator. The first two were ok but I can confidently say that this translator takes the crown in the realm of real-life translation.About the device: It brilliantly combines technical sophistication with user friendliness. It is highly accurate in the five languages that I tried with native speakers. It was fairly easy to activate the sim card. The cellular service in my house was not the best, but the customer support team at vavus helped me. They were very nice.I can't overlook the sleek design and compact size. It is very handy and easy to travel with. I just take it out of my pocket and immediately I can talk to almost anyone in the world. The translation speed is a lot faster than the other two brands. I'm keeping this one and I'm recommending it to all my friends. For me, this translating device is the epitome of how technology can break down language barriers and bring the world closer together.

I am... realllly happy with this!
I've owned many translators over the years. The best of them tend to come from Japan and only function in Japan. Google is not particularly good at Translation and I strongly suspect that is because Google is made people who are not particularly inclined to like East Asians.Adding to the problem the Play Store apps tend to be meta-data nets rather than actual utilities. Download one and for the rest of your life you get phone calls from no one you know. Answer one and it bricks your phone. This leaves one in the situation where a good dedicated translator is a must. I've tried many. Each have their pros and cons. However, at least for the time being, I find this one has no cons. You turn it on and it works. You say something to it? It accurately translates that into the language of interest. For me, this is Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Does it work? Yes. And that's pretty surprising. This isn't a scam device. It does exactly what you want it to do.There is some necessity for "brains on" when using it, however. It's pretty common sense stuff, but might through you at first. Where are the menus, for example? You turn the phone on. Simple blue background is found at the desktop. The answer? Read the screen when you put it back to sleep mode. "Swipe". E.G. Swipe left to get to the rest of the menus or pull down from the top like any cellular device.Taking photos of text and having it translate is also a "brains on" scenario. If you've just used the talk feature for translating you'll likely have set the "you" and "me" buttons to the target languages you're using. However, you need to do this for the camera as well. Left to right. That is, if you're translating from Mandarin to English you need to have the left hand translation be in Mandarin and the right be in English. Same for all other languages. Input left, output right; for the camera only.Other than that this thing is very think-and-do. It's not flashy. It's not clunky. It is exactly what it advertises to be. A translator. I'm so happy with this thing. I wish I had something like this for college. If you've got someone in your family traveling internationally or learning a new language I'd put this as a top-of-the-line gift. There are many more translators of equal or great price with far less functionality. It's not exactly flimsy either. I wouldn't go dropping it, but it's not cheaply made. It's got a kind of early 2000s purpose built feel to it or late 90s luxury tech. Light weight, yes, but not "cheap". We'll see how lasts long term, but on start up? Functions perfectly. It feels incredibly weird to be writing that. So many translators are a scam in some way. I don't feel that I got scammed with this at all. I feel like I stumbled onto a real gem of a device. It's exactly what I wanted. No more. No less. Very pleased. Whoever made this, good job!

Better than others I have tried
I am not sure if a really good translator exists but this one is pretty good. While it may not say what you want all the time, it will get you by. Battery life is fair. It will last all day if I do not try to use Wi-Fi and I limit use. Be sure to download the language you want so you can use it offline. I like offline better as the response is faster. Using online may have slightly better responses but it will take longer and sometimes the pause is long enough that people become restless waiting on you to communicate. With that said, if it died on my next trip I would get another one.

Quickly malfunctioned
Appeared to have good quality. Easy to set up and operate. Nice size and weight. Unfortunately after using for one 10 minute conversation it became incapable of hearing me. The activation of the microphone became intermittent. And thus could not process the translation. May have been a random defect. Don’t know but returned and ordered a different brand.

Didn't understand French Peoples accent
Didn't understand French Peoples accent, did understand daughter w/2 yrs of HS French, did understand English. Worked English to French but when we attempted to have a French person speak into it, it didn't understand them. Worked fine for English to French. Screen a bit difficult to read and sound difficult to not usable in crowded/background noise areas. Wound up using cell phone and Google translate the most. Still fun to use for learning a language.

Great product and customer service from Vavus!
Bought my Vavus language translator two weeks ago. I was not able to turn it on and contacted customer service through email. They got back to me the same day and offered to send a replacement unit. They were super nice and professional. Two days after I got the new unit and customer service sent instructions and the unit worked like a charm. Love the product, is easy to use and translate 120 languages, the volume is great and you can carry on a conversation without speaking a foreign language since Vavus does it for you. The only criticism is the picture translation, the camera is not great, and is difficult to take an accurate picture for Vavus to translate the text. But all the other features are great. I am thankful to customer service who offered me a free shipping label to return the first unit. Really awesome product and service.Maria
