It works now
Install was a bit more than the instructions identify but unit does interface well with factory harnesses and the screen mount looks almost factory (kinda like the post 2018 models). I have a 2012 Audi S5 convertible and this upgrade makes the dated electronics feel fresh and new. Needed tech support as first several weeks didn’t have audio playback. Tech support via text was awkward due to message response delays but overall effective to solve my issue. Need to connect the MMI AUX cable in glove box even if you don’t use it for the audio. If the mounting hardware for the head unit adapter had washers or was more robust I’d give it another star. If the software was more stable without having to reset frequently I’d give it a full 5 stars

Solid head unit for the price
Installation instructions were brief but I was able to figure it out. The cables come all as one harness, most installation videos on similar systems in the B8 A4/S4 have multiple harnesses. This makes it a little hard to get everything in place. When installing the wiring harness, route all wires from the glove box area where the CANBUS plug is (red plug in instructions). You will be able to get the big squares through the back and the display cables (white connector) up between the vents and the airbag. If your car is like mine, there isn’t much room to route wires. The cars in the YouTube videos must be configured differently, because they seemed to just drop the wires in and go. But in my 2011 S4 it took some extra work to get them routed right. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because CarPlay doesn’t like to use the USB cable. If your iPhone is connected to the USB, the head unit will work for 15 seconds, switch to the Audi MMI for 5-7 seconds, and restart over and over. Wireless CarPlay has been working fine so far. There are two USB cables in the wiring harness, one comes off the white connector that plugs into the display and the other comes straight out the back of the display. I have only tried the first one. If I ever try the second one, I will update the review.
