Wood: Identification and Use: Identification & Use

An essential reference guide for any woodworker
This book is a must-have for wood enthusiasts and professionals alike. It was a present for my partner, who is a luthier, and he uses it constantly. There are some very good online resources for wood identification and properties, but none as handy and concise as this book, plus sometimes you don't have the time to browse the internet when you're in the workshop! The book is very well organised in sections, with several ways of finding the particular wood species you are looking for, and details on the possible hazards from working with every type of wood (which are not easy to find anywhere else, and extremely useful to know!). The illustrations are very nice and really helpful as well, and the hard cover makes it extra sturdy, useful when you need to refer to the book regularly!

My wood Bible!
I must admit I was a bit swayed to buy this book by the two 5* reviews it got! I'm really glad I did buy it!! If you're into wood in anyway this is a fantastic reference book! It's got some really good sections all about wood, how it grows and it's structure etc plus it has a seperate index of 'Common' names so you dont have to be an expert in latin! Each page contains a picture of the wood, a description, it's properties, seasoning, durabilty and typical uses. Along with a drawing of the tree, its leaves and flower/fruit/seed. other common names and where it grows. lt also has an imediate identification symbol if it is a hard or softwood. It's amazing how often I pick up and refer to this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works with wood or who is interested in woods.

How to Choose Timbers
An erudite comprehensive review of commercial timbers, in English, Arranged botanically. The botanical classification is liable to repeated modification as the pundits struggle to agree. It is however the fundamental classification to avoid the bewildering variety of names that each timber has collected from numerous sources . English and European timbers are vastly outnumbered by American, South American and African types . The uses and characteristics are clearly described providing a useful reference resource.

I love this book!
I love this book! It has so much information all presented in a clear and organized manner. I am just learning to carve and wanted research the different types of wood there are out there in the world. This book helps me do that! There is a lumber yard not far from where I live which sell some exotic wood (expensive!) so I plan on visiting them sometime in the future to see for myself what these woods look like first hand!

Good, addresses it’s title well.
Adequately describes what it intends to do without going into boring minute details. Enough for non professionals.
