I am subtracting one star due to the issue I had with mine. Upon first inspection I was impressed with the apparent quality and machining of the unit. After adjusting to the desired angle I wanted and tightning the locking screw I noticed there was still movement at the joint. I tried tightning the screw further but it would not tighten and the joint was still loose. The joints have teeth that mesh when when the screw is tightened to prevent movement but in my case the teeth were not fully meshing when the screw was tightened. After removing the screw completely and disassembling the joint I noticed the problem. There is a spring inside that pushes the joint ends apart when you loosen the screw to allow adjusting of the angle. The spring in mine was too long and was being fully compressed when tightening the screw, preventing the screw from being tightened further. I cut about 1/4" off the spring length with a pair of diagonal cutters and re-assembled the joint. Now the joint locks solid with no movement even with only moderate tightening of the screw. I noticed reading other reviews that other people apparently had this issue and broke the unit or stripped the screw trying to tighten the joint not realizing it was the spring inside the joint causing the problem. I hope this helps other people if they run into this issue.After installing this on my bike I really like it and adjusting the handlebars up to a better position, the bike is much more comfortable to ride.

I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the Wake MTB varaiable stem. For the price, less that $20 I was a little worried about the quality. However, I'm happy to report these feel just as well built as any bigger name brand stem. The variable geometry will come in very handy on my hybrid road conversion project where things can get wonky.My biggest concern when purchasing was whether one would ever be able to get the pivot bolt tight enough to completely keep the stem from moving. Like when you hit a pothole or something. Nicely, this turned out to be a non-issue. The inner portion of the linkage is what's known as a rosette surface. Basically, a bunch of interlocking "V's". First, as stated in my review I am a tall person. I recently purchased a new bicycle to replace a bicycle that was about 10 years old. My size falls right just below needing a XXL bicycle so the XL bicycle will have the seat extended significantly. This places the handlebars low and was making me put a lot of weight on my hands. After riding a few miles my hands would go numb. I did discover that the bicycle store had installed the bicycle stem for aggressive riding (i.e., pointed down) so I reversed the bicycle stem to point upward. This made a difference. I started looking for a higher bicycle stem and most were fixed adjustment. Then I found this one and when I seen that it had positive teeth engagement (versus friction only) I decided to try it. I first tried a 30 degree adjustment but finally ended at the 60 degree adjustment. I like this much better than an extension as it does not increase the moment and stresses in the bicycle stem. I can also now ride 20 miles without my hands going numb.

Like a custom fitted bike. My aching back will ache no more. I love it. Had the bike shop install it, took 15 minutes. Highly recommended. Trek Marlin 5, 21.5 frame.

I recommend this item to bring the handlebar up and back to let me sit up straighter. Make sure to carefully measure both the stem and the handle bar diameters. This unit is 1-1/8 x 1-1/8 (stem x handlebar). I needed a 1-1/8 x 1. I should have purchased the split bushings for the handlebar. Fortunately I have a lathe and I fabricated my own. One more warning: The unit is slightly shorter than the existing goose neck and consequently The cap that tightens the stem bearings no longer worked. Again, using my lathe I fabricated a spacer from a water pipe. These spacers can also be purchased separately.

Overall this is a nice stem extension. I installed this on a teen bike to raise the handle bars and make the bike more comfortable to ride (and to get another year out of the bike before upgrading to a bigger size!). The stem rotates on a spring loaded screw. The spring loaded screw loosens after just a few minutes of riding and the handle bars wiggle. To solve that problem, I used Locktite Thread Locker (Blue) to essentially glue the screw in place so that it would not loosen from vibration. That worked fine, but added a few days to the install by the time I diagnosed it and procured the Locktite to properly install it. Recommend you purchase the Thread Locker compound when you buy this product.

I had to order this very quickly for a weekend when I realized my new handlebars were thicker than my older ones. As such, I had to make a hasty decision to get in the shipping window. So far, I haven't regretted it. I had previously owned an adjustable stem (which you would think would be a no-brainer as opposed to misjudging and having to return and re-order until getting the correct size). However, that stem didn't stay clamped and I frequently had to stop and retighten on my ride -- a real bummer. This one stays tight, and that's about the only requirement I had. Love it!
