For as wireless as the non-nerds think the world is, those of us who work in the underbelly of IT know there's plenty of cable out there! This kit is a good basic tester that has the nice touch of including the one AA battery you need to get up and running. Most of what I work with is cat6 cable so I tried a couple of my home built and some factory patch cables. The results were exactly what I expected to see. I might be getting older and can't easily see my pair colors as easily but I can still build a mean and compliant cable.Trust me when I say that having a tester in your kit will save you tons of time eliminating what seems as obvious. If you don't think the cable is the problem because it's been in the same patch panel unmoving for years, I can tell you if I had a buck each time I made that dumb assumption, I'd have paid for this tester many times over.Pick one up and eliminate stupid problems and save yourself time. It's a good solid unit for the price.My only complaint is more of a design aesthetic, why include dust covers for the ports if they aren't actually attached to the housing?!? Sure they look good but it takes exactly 1.2 seconds to lose one in a server cabinet when you take them out. I would love to see them firmly attached so you can't drop one, but that's not a do or die for this product.

This ZKH network cable tester is a good concept, with two features not seen on others. It has the standard cable test also. There are instructions, but they are not great.The standard cable test consists of connecting one cable end to the main tester and the second end to the smaller piece. They can be seperated. Then, the lights will light in sequence if they are connected. I prefer some others that light all the lights, then lock in the results so you can see a pass / fail at the end. In addition, some lights were dimmer than others.It can test if wires are connected to pins on one side of a cable. They do not explain how that works, but it appears to work. I took a cable and slowly pulled it out of the test jack so some pins opened up, and it indicated that. This feature appeared to work correctly.It includes testing on a POE switch. It is supposed to use the power from the switch to test cables. I tried on two 802.3 (various modes) compliant switches and the lights did come on, except for pins 3 and 6, which were either dim or not lit at all. This does not seem to be correct behavior. It appears that something is wrong with the tester. I even removed the battery to see if it needed some sort of reset, but that did not work. It is possible it was affected by the POE switch, but they should not exceed the 60V limit the tester states.
