Every quilter should have one of these handy tools!
* my fountain pen shown for size comparisonI can only find "pros" for this handy little tool - and no "cons."It is used for basting your quilt sandwich together when you use safety pins as your preferred method. I have been quilting for decades and I started out using safety pins, but opening and closing hundreds of them while they are attached to the fabric liked to kill my index finger and made it so horribly sore - the one used for the leverage in the opening and closing of the pin. Then I went to long-stitch basting...too much work and took a long time to do the basting. Then I tried just using long quilter's pins...too much accidental pricking of my fingers when moving my quilt around while under the needle while stippling (as I couldn't be bothered to take the time to buy, or use, stick on pin tip protectors.) So that left me to go back to my original safety pin method, only using a teaspoon for the leverage - and I hated that as it always slipped under the safety pin. This little dandy is amazing! I slip it under the bottom of the safety pin where it comes out of the fabric, and with the little cut-in groove, the pin is held firmly in place and so easy to close now!I know that these types of safety pin tools have been around for years, but I never did try them till now. I wish I had purchased one like this years ago! It is such a time-saver and it is well made and sturdy!

What a blessing this tool is, totally saves my fingers!!
I have been quilting for years. mostly self taught and through watching videos online, but I had never heard of this tool until recently. This tool you use to help you close and open the safety pins with you are pinning your quilt sandwich together. I mostly make lap quilts, and have always just used my fingers, but after opening and closing 20 or so my fingers are just tired and ache (I have arthritis), so I usually have to take a break, because you know you need to use a ton of pins to secure it properly. The end is easy to hold with the comfortable wooden handle and the other end has 2 grooves that you slip under the open arm of the safety pin and the pin in one of the grooves, then use this tool to push to close the pin. Once you get it down, you will be so quick at closing all the pins quickly. So I have found what works great for me is I will lay out my quilt backing, batting and quilt top. Once I am happy with how it is laying flat. I will open several pins and start pinning the quilt, but leave them all open. I will go back over my quilt making sure it is smooth, no wrinkles and such, then when I am happy I will use this tool to go back to close ALL the pins. Then while I am stitching my quilt together, I will use this tool to help open and remove the pins as I am ready for each one to come out. Again, totally saves my fingers and most certainly one of my favorite tolls for quilting!

Great price, smaller footprint
My review is for the Savina Pin Basting Tool - Opens & Closes The Pins Easily, Saves Your Finger When PinningBesides the absolute SIN of calling sewists "sewers" (say it out loud and you'll know why..), this is a cheaper version of the other pin basting accessory tool (to help you open and close the COUNTLESS safety pins required to pin baste your quilts) currently available. This is just a bargain. It's also actually finished nicer than the 'official' version...which I also own. This one is thinner however, so I think preference might ultimately come to a person's typical grip and maybe hand size. But for my petite hands, this one fits not only my wallet better, but my hands as well!Happy basting! (Just kidding...basting is no fun EVER, but this truly makes it less of a chore)Bottom line: I would purchase again.

My fingers are so happy we found this!
After reading recommendations to use a tool like this from my favorite quilting blogs I decided to try it. Basting my last quilt with pins did a number on my fingers! This tool is crazy smart.. it literally does all the work! I’m giving it to my quilting buddies in our local guild for Christmas because it’s THAT good! A great notion for quilters!

Simple Tool - Speeds Up Quilt Basting
The ‘Savina Pin Basting Tool’ is a simple design that really makes quilt basting easier. Basting a quilt sandwich (pieced top, batting, backing) with pins can be a challenge, especially if your hands suffer from arthritis. Even those who experience carpal tunnel syndrome will benefit from this tool. The tool eases the pin tip up then cradles it in a groove. When the pin is stabilized clipping the pin closed is quick and easy.I use a modern spray basting product but still grab pins and occasionally follow those up with loose hand applied running stitches to baste. In either case, basting often requires hundreds of pins and the repetitive fiddly work often leads to overstressed inflamed knuckles and sore hands. The Savina handle is a comfortable shape, just the right length, and has a deep enough groove to lift and support the pin tip. I have several different Savina wood handled products which make my fiber work so much easier. The Savina Seam Roller is a must and now I count the Savina Pin Basting Tool in the favorite tools category!

works GREAT! fingers are saved now!
This little tool is such a finger saver! So easy to use - I've always wanted one but it was out of my price range. This is so much more economically priced. It's very well constructed and the wood is so smooth. This is the third item I've got from this company and the care that they put into creating and packaging their items is above and beyond way better than any other company in the sewing industry. Every item I've got from Savina is also made with the smoothest wood I've ever handled. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND 👍😁👍 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a helpful tool
Modern quilting tools are SO helpful!! This little tool helps to open/close quilting pins. It works really well, for me it was a bit awkward to use initially but once you get the motion down, this tool makes the basting process a lot easier. The handle is wood and comfortable to hold. It has a leather strap so if you are lucky enough to have a crafting room with peg board to hang/display your notions this strap is handy. I would order this product again.
