Hitchhiking with Prophets: A Ride Through the Salvation Story of the Old Testament

Chad Bird does a wonderful job of putting a human face on Biblical theology, walking us through God’s grand story of redemption in language we can all relate to. I really enjoyed how he draws out what, to me, is perhaps the most comforting aspect of Scripture. Namely, that God uses weak and deeply flawed human beings to work out His will and His ways. (Which is why God gets all the glory!)Bird’s book highlights how the Bible makes no effort to whitewash the foibles, shortcomings, and scars of our biblical heroes. (A great source of hope for knuckleheads like me.) He paints a beautiful, biblical picture of the Lord as,“The God who is not afraid of mud and muck, who never gives up on even the worst of families, who raises the fallen, heals the wounded, and often does his most hopeful work in our lives when we suppose all hope is lost.” (p. 35)I highly recommend this book!

Chad Bird has studied the OT in depth and in context of Biblical Theological History. His life story makes him write from the truth of God's steadfast love and grace. I have not been one to read the OT much, so this was the PERFECT book to summarize it in a relatable and easy to understand. He uses Hebrew words and their meanings. He keeps everything in context. I appreciate his style of writing that is down to earth and enjoyable- not boring. His books draw in the reader. He is an EXCELLENT teacher of the OT. I have learned so much reading his books and listening to his short videos on FB and Instagram.

I discovered Chad Bird after spending years being tired of legalistic and unloving people who seemed inclined to quote the Old Testament with no sense of the Jesus I knew from the New. They wore me down and left me convinced that I would not find anything of any real value in the Old. I was wrong. Chad has opened my eyes to the grace and love there no matter how stained and bloodied by the legalists. I suggest that they read his writing and learn.
