Q: Battery life is claimed to be 12 hours. What is the actual battery life that people have been getting?

In power save mode(screen off and device in snooze mode) and navigation on its possible to get a little over 12 hours use on a full charge. In normal use with screen on and navigation on I can get 8 hours from mine. If its a bright day and the screen is set to auto brightness and you have alot of route recalculations I've had the burn time as low as 5 hours.

Q: Does this work like google maps on a smartphone?

Hi, this is just for Navigation but is quite good. It also shows you where you have been if doubling back. Depends on what you are trying to get out of it in fairness. If you just want to navigate then use a phone, but if you need an all round package this is a great device.

Q: Does it come with full European maps?

Yes, a full European Cycle map.

Q: Does it show canal routes ?

Yes, canal towpaths are marked with a dotted line, as are cycle lanes running alongside roads.
