Basic Top Filling Lip Balm Containers
I like to make my own lip balm so I know what's in them and can avoid some of the chemicals added to commercial lip balms. It isn't difficult and the only equipment needed is a scale and two pots that can be nestled together to make a double boiler --- the large pot has hot water in it, the smaller pot rests inside the large one and allows the beeswax to melt slowly and safely before adding the other ingredients. These lip balm containers hold 5 ml (or about 0.17 ounces) which is the size I prefer because they fit into a pocket and so are handy when needed. These need to be filled from the top so I fill a small amount, wait a few minutes for that to set, and then fill completely to avoid a mess oozing out the bottom before the waxes set. I have drilled a piece of 2 by 4 wood with holes large enough to stand lip balm containers upright so I don't have to hold them as I fill them (That makes pouring hot wax into the tubes much less painful!) and fill each in the row before coming back and topping them off as the contents shrink a bit as they cool. After that I leave them for a day or so to completely cool before use. These containers operate smoothly. The twist knob on the bottom is textured so it is easier to twist while wearing gloves. Also included in the package is a piece of flexible yellow plastic as shown in my photos. I'm not sure what that is for but I guess it could be used to scrape the pot used to melt the ingredients?
