Great resource for anyone who struggles with communicating in the workfoce
I had been in search of a book on improving my communication skills. As a person who has received critiques about my communication skills, especially in the workplace, I was happy to stumble upon this book. Conflicts at work have always been an issue for me and I found this book to be non-judgmental and very empathetic and helpful. That's one of the points the author makes... overcoming barriers in our communication requires empathy and understanding the other person's perspective and closely (but compassionately) looking at the roles we play in communicating. I appreciated especially the need to be vulnerable that was written about. And it was a pleasant surprise that it was written so poetically. It reads like a novel. This isn't a manual, it's a chat with a good, smart friend! The real-world examples the author cited helped me feel like I was in the hands of an expert. The author spoke of a project where members of the team were from a diversity of backgrounds. He gave specific examples of how they overcame the challenges, like cultural exchange sessions, the use of technology and making sure that understanding and empathy were at the core, and the base of all the work. The author also gets very specific and tangible when writing about listening skills: echoing understanding, asking probing questions, non-verbals. The section on empathetic listening was so helpful. He broke it down to techniques like pausing and reflecting and validating the person you are speaking to. I felt like I was being coached and I also feel that I have already begun to implement tools and tactics I read. Being mindful of one's tone, pace and volume was covered. And the author acts as a cheerleader encouraging us to be expressive when we speak. This book has a healthy mix of tactics and encouragement. I was mainly interested in a book on spoken communication but was pleasantly surprised with the section on written communication and a special section on writing in the digital age. Being extra mindful of clarity and tone in emails was especially helpful. If I ran an HR department, I would get this book for all my employees and it's a wonderful resource for anyone like me who is in the workforce and struggles with the ongoing work of communicating clearly with co-workers.

Relatable, easy to read, and to the point
Unlike many guides that focus solely on workplace communication or public speaking, this book addresses a wide range of scenarios, making the lessons highly relatable and applicable. It emphasizes not just the mechanics of effective speaking but also the importance of empathy, listening, and emotional intelligence, providing a well-rounded guide to becoming an influential communicator and leader in all areas of life. I would say it is ideal for professionals, leaders, and anyone looking to improve their relationships and communication skills. The book covers a wide spectrum of scenarios, from public speaking to intimate conversations. It is short but because this book offers a unique approach to communication, blending professional and personal aspects to make it more relatable to the everyday person it is worth a read.
